How to Make Realistic Goals

We all have things we want to achieve in life. Places we want to go, the amount of money we want in the bank, a credit score we wish to achieve, or a bodyweight we would like to see. All of these things could require time and a plan. The easiest way to accomplish this is by setting goals. Goals that are achievable and realistic; you need to make your goals SMART. Let’s get into it.

Make a SMART List

What goals would you like to achieve in a year, month, or week? Write them down. Make sure they are SMART goals; Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. Here are some examples:

Specific

  • Say you want to lose 30 pounds instead of saying you want to lose weight. Be as specific as possible and not broad.

Measurable

  • By saying you want to lose 30 pounds gives you something to measure so that you know whether or not you are making progress. Then you can celebrate at certain milestones. For example, every 5-10 pounds, you could reward yourself.

Achievable

  • Make sure you can attain it in the timeframe you set. Saying you want to be a millionaire in a year may take a lot of work to achieve. Becoming a millionaire in 10-15 years could be more achievable.

Realistic

  • A goal could be achievable, but it may not be realistic. You could lose 30 pounds in 2 months, but how realistic is it that you will stick to the diet plan?

Timely

  • Give yourself a realistic end date. Don’t make it super easy to where you allow yourself to drag it out, give yourself a little challenge. If you know losing 30 pounds in 4 months is easy to achieve challenge yourself to lose 30 pounds in 3 months instead.

Make It Happen

Now that you’ve got your SMART goal list, it is time to EXECUTE!! It is time to put in the action. Make your plan and attack it. Get rid of all your distractions and avoid people telling you what you can’t do. Surround yourself with people that support you and will pick you up and motivate you if you fall off. Remember, this is something that YOU want. So do the work, provide the action, execute the plan, and watch your goals become a reality!!
